Terroir
February 2021
From October 2020 to February 2021, the artist Grant Levy-Lucero stayed at the Domaine du Marais to conduct research on the idea of Terroir. The result of these four months of research was presented in February 2021 through 10 unique pieces exhibited at Le Marais.
As a neo-pop artist, Grant explores popular imagery in relationship with the notion of 'terroir', an often misused word. Indeed, a terroir refers to a territory, but also to the people who inhabit it, to their cultures and customs, rooted in a long history. Grant, as an American, has a different understanding of the notion of terroir, and manages through his works to embody his “outsider's vision” of the concept, dear to the old continent.
Grand vin Château Latour, Dom Pérignon Vintage, Ruinart Brut... These well-known names are above all those of French terroirs, embodied by specific agroecosystems and steeped in tradition. Yet, for the most part, these names are those of world-famous brands. As it makes its way into pop culture, terroir is embodied in a fixed, fantasized image, a label.
Exploring these tensions, Grant Levy-Lucero invites us to rethink the images that populate our imagination. His approach fits perfectly with the vision of 91530 Le Marais : aspiring to reinvest a territory, it is about the attachment to the land and how to reassert its value.
